Fighting For You:
We don’t need voucher systems or for-profit schools that take opportunities away from our most vulnerable families and children. We need to invest in our students, invest in our teachers, invest in our public schools, and empower school districts across Colorado to serve every child in our great state to the very best of their ability.
Created public schools for homeless youth and new immigrants
Jared founded and served as superintendent of the New America School to give new immigrants, underserved students, and English language learners the ability to earn a world-class education.
He has also founded the Academy of Urban Learning to make sure children experiencing homelessness can get a quality high school education.
Tirelessly fought the DeVos-Trump agenda of privatization and vouchers
Jared has tirelessly fought the destructive DeVos-Trump budget that diverts money from public schools to vouchers and for-profit private schools.
Jared has fought for the full funding of all public schools, including fulfilling our promise to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, and also to provide children with outdoor learning opportunities and environmental education through the No Child Left Inside Act.
Replaced No Child Left Behind with a new law that reduces testing and improves school funding
Jared worked with public school advocates and President Obama to pass the “Every Student Succeeds Act,” which gets rid of ineffective federal mandates, improves funding for public schools, and reduces testing. He played a key role in the passage of the bill.
Stood up to bullies with the Student Non-Discrimination Act
Too many students who are, or are perceived to be, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender are subject to discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and violence in their schools. Jared has fought to make sure that every student feels safe, comfortable, and ready to learn in their school by fighting to establish federal protections against anti-LGBTQ discrimination.
Led and supported measures to improve school funding at the ballot box
Jared spoke out against the practice of sending LGBTQ immigrants back to hostile nations, called on immigration officials to stop separating same-gender couples, and demanded that ICE work to prevent gender-based violence in detention facilities.
